Programs
The value of an Eastman academic degree is demonstrated by the number of graduates who hold positions in professional orchestras, bands, chamber ensembles, opera companies, conservatories and college music departments, school music programs, community music schools, the recording industry, the musical instrument and technologies industry, and many other fields. Eastman’s performance-intensive Undergraduate degree programs develop comprehensive musical skills and literacy. Graduate-degree programs integrate performance skills, music scholarship, pedagogy, and professionalism to prepare students for new challenges in the professional musical world.
The value of an Eastman education is further enriched by opportunities to earn certificates and diplomas in specific areas, and by special programs that add depth to our innovative and detailed curricula. A diploma program consists of a prescribed curriculum, including applied music instruction, academic coursework, and in some cases internship experiences. A certificate is awarded for pre-professional activity, such as outstanding performance (Performer’s Certificate or Artist’s Certificate) or intensive co-curricular work.
The undergraduate program now includes the Arts Leadership Certificate and the World Music Certificate. Graduate programs include the Arts Leadership Certificate, the Advanced Certificate in College and/or Community Teaching, the World Music Certificate, the Advanced Certificate in the Art of Improvisation, and the Advanced Certificate in Ethnomusicology. Other new programs are being developed, always with the goal of providing our students with a top-quality education that is both innovative and relevant.
Academic Departments
The various departments at Eastman are organized according to the areas of performance and scholarship. This section is an overview of the departments and will give the Eastman applicant an idea of the philosophy of each. As a further help to potential applicants, the approximate size of each department is listed, together with mention of the graduate awards (assistantships) available within each department.

Students who are considering applying to the Eastman School and who desire to take a lesson with a faculty member may make individual arrangements directly with the faculty member. A fee of $50-$150, payable to the faculty member, may be charged.

Studios
Eastman studios are an essential element in the development of instrumental and vocal mastery. In their studios, Eastman students have the opportunity to work with artist faculty, guest artists, and each other in private and master class settings. Through their work in the studio, Eastman students experience growth in artistry in a collegial atmosphere.
Several studios (trombone, percussion and others) offer ensembles, which give regular performances and are integral parts of Eastman musical life.
